Goals
With a herd approaching 150, our goal is to wean not less
than 200 kids per year. Of these 200 kids, only the top 50%
will enter the replacement/breeder market. Those remaining
will go to the terminal market.
Our doe selection standards are more oriented toward
performance though not at the expense of conformation.
Nathan, my son and best goatherd, and I place emphasis on:
- Maternals: the ability to wean twins before second birthday
- Parasite tolerance/resistance: we only handle the goats twice a
year and do fecal egg counts on farm and Famacha screenings as
needed.
- Hooves that need no more attention than the twice per year
handling. Kikos often tolerate less trimming.
- Conformation: good weight and width with emphasis on weight gain
in the buck. Nathan says it's easier to maintain a few bucks to put
weight on the kids than a whole herd of does. Therefore, our sires
are more closely graded for conformation.
